Play Go Against AI

Practice Go any time against the computer — a partner that always shows up, never judges, and lets you take moves back. Choose your board size and how strong the computer plays, independently, and start in seconds.

Pick your board and your computer strength — separately

  • Board size is your call: 9×9 to learn, 13×13 for room to fight, 19×19 for the full game.
  • Computer strength is a separate choice: Beginner (forgiving), Casual (looks for captures), or Stronger (sharper, but still practice).
  • Any strength plays on any board — so you can stay on Beginner while learning a 19×19 board, or take a Stronger game on a quick 9×9.

Who you're playing

You play against the computer — a calm, patient partner that always plays a legal move and lets you take moves back while you learn. It's a relaxed way to practice on your own. We'd like to offer a stronger computer opponent in the future, and we'll always be straight with you about who you're facing.

While the computer is thinking, the board stays responsive: you can review the position, ask for a hint, or look back through your moves.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the computer, and can I change it?
Yes — you choose the computer's strength: Beginner, Casual, or Stronger. All three are relaxed practice partners that always play a legal move; Stronger just plays more sharply. It is honest practice play, not an expert engine. You set the strength under “New game,” separately from the board size.
Why play Go against AI instead of a person?
The computer is available instantly, plays at a steady level, and never minds if you undo a move or take your time. It is the fastest way to get practice and try ideas.
Can the computer explain its moves?
Yes. The “Explain last move” button describes what the last move actually did on the board — whether it captured, created atari, or took territory.
